Use this to add your site directly to its index, verify that Google sees your site (and sub-domains), and also fix the errors it has identified. Split testing has shown me that sites indexed this way perform better than sites that rely on xml sitemaps. FYI you can also add sitemaps here.

How to Get Your Site Verified By Google

Blogs created in Blogger are automatically verified in Webmaster Tools. However, older blogs, WordPress and Typepad blogs are not automatically verified, and should be verified using the meta tag method.

To verify your Blogger / WordPress blog:

1. On the Webmaster Tools home page, click Add a site.
2. Enter your blog’s URL e.g. (http://ivanwalsh.blogspot.com) and click Continue.
3. On the Verification page, select the Meta tag verification method and copy the meta tag provided into your text editor.
4. Sign in to Blogger.com (or WordPress).

For Blogger, open the Dashboard, click the Layout link for the blog you are verifying.

5. On the Layout tab, click Edit HTML.
6. Paste the meta tag after the <head> element in the template HTML and click Save template.
7. On the Manage Verification page in Webmaster Tools, confirm that Meta tag is selected as the verification method, and then click the Verify

For WordPress and TypePad blogs:

8. Save the Google code to a HTML file.
9. FTP it to the root directory.
10. On the Manage Verification page in Webmaster Tools, confirm that Meta tag is selected as the verification method, and then click the Verify.
11. If successful, a message appears. Woohoo!

Where is Google Webmaster Tools

It’s here https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en

Did this work for you? Let me know if you have any problems.

One of the hidden features in Windows Live Writer is the ability to automatically ping (send a signal) to popular blog aggregators every time you publish something to your blog. This feature actively pings the servers of the blog aggregators you specify and to indicate when there is new material.

To do this in Writer, click on Ping Servers in the Options dialog (Tools, Options, Ping Servers).

Add the names of the servers you want to ping, for example, some popular search engines are:

http://api.feedster.com/ping.php

You can also use a pinging service like Ping-o-Matic (this service will automatically ping a number of popular sites for you). Just put the following in the list of ping servers:

http://rpc.pingomatic.com

What other servers should I add to this list?

Louis Gray makes a case for putting Gmail as the heart of your Social Media Strategy.

Does it add up?

Well, Yes and No.

Let’s start with why use a Google account?

1. Access to Google Reader

2. Create a link blog using Google Reader

3. Use Feedburner to distribute your blog through RSS

4. Tracking statistics via Google Analytics

For most of us, this makes sense and we’re probably doing it already.

However, Louis argument that: ‘By using Gmail, companies can centralize all social media-related communication, make it available to third-party vendors who may be participating, and easily integrate with other Google tools.

Needs a little re-think.

Why?

Well, later on he concedes that Gmail can’t solve every account. You still need a Facebook ID to start a fan page, and a Yahoo! ID to use Flickr.

Ok, so it’s not perfect.

But if Gmail can accelerate your social media strategy, then take what you can and run with it.

Here’s Louis plan of attack

1. Secure an official company Gmail ID (my italics)

2. Use it as the hub of you social networking activity.

3. Twitter, FriendFeed, YouTube, SlideShare accounts should use that same e-mail

4. Setup new connection notifications and direct messages through Gmail and stats from SocialTooNow, I go along with this.

Indeed, there are other smart ways to integrate social media activities into Google.

These two from Digital Inspiration show you

1. How to monitor your website/blog with Google Docs and how to track changes automatically http://www.labnol.org/

2. Even better is this Google Docs trick to find Your Most Popular Web Pages on Twitter http://www.labnol.org/internet/Ok. Back to Louis.

However, others have pointed out that the following suggestion may violate Gmail’s terms of service.

‘Whether you structure the e-mail address as companyinc@gmail.com or companycorp@gmail.com doesn’t matter, so long as it’s clearly official, and the “From” data is a company name, not that of an individual.’

Daniel Pritchett sees it as a bad plan. ‘Shared accounts tend to violate TOS.’ While John Wang hopes that Google Wave will make this all easier. “It looks more and more like what SharePoint should’ve been but never became.”

Perception is (almost) everything

My concern is a little different.

If you surrender or retire your corporate email address (hard to see that getting signed off!) you also run the risk of how customers, especially new ones, and potential clients will react to your Gmail account.

It might be an ‘official’ Gmail account but the question in many minds will be: ‘Why can’t they get a real one?’

Give your 2 cents at: http://www.louisgray.com/live/2009/07/gmail-should-be-hub-of-your-companys.html

Give your 2 cents at: http://www.louisgray.com/live/2009/07/gmail-should-be-hub-of-your-companys.html

via code.flickr.com

Flickr is releasing all of the Flickr shapefiles as a single download, available for use under the Creative Commons Zero Waiver. That’s fancy-talk for “public domain”.

The long version is:

To the extent possible under law, Flickr has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to the “Flickr Shapefiles Public Dataset, Version 1.0”.

This work is published from the United States. While you are under no obligation to do so, wherever possible it would be extra-super-duper-awesome if you would attribute flickr.com when using the dataset. Thanks!

Flickr is doing this for a few reasons.

1. We want people (developers, researchers and anyone else who wants to play) to find new and interesting ways to use the shapefiles and we recognize that, in many cases, this means having access to the entire dataset.

2. We want people to feel both comfortable and confident using this data in their projects and so we opted for a public domain license so no one would have to spend their time wondering about the issue of licensing. We also think the work that the Creative Commons crew is doing is valuable and important and so we chose to release the shapefiles under the CC0 waiver as a show of support.

3. We want people to create their own shapefiles and to share them so that other people (including us!) can find interesting ways to use them. We’re pretty sure there’s something to this “shapefile stuff” even if we can’t always put our finger on it so if publishing the dataset will encourage others to do the same then we’re happy to do so.

The new version of TweetDeck lets you automatically sync all your columns and groups across any computer or iPhone.Sync has been one of the most popular feature requests among TweetDeck users for quite some time.

You can now access all your TweetDeck information no matter where you are and get up and running on any computer, Windows, Mac, Linux, or even iPhone without creating everything all over again.

It will also safely store your information so you’ll never lose your settings if your computer crashes or you delete a group by mistake.

Tip: TweetDeck keeps working in the background so whenever you change a group or add a new column it’s updated and available on all your computers and your iPhone.

To get started, download the new version of TweetDeck and register for a TweetDeck account. All your existing columns and groups will then be imported and safely stored in the TweetDeck cloud.

Next, download the new version to all of the other computers you use TweetDeck on and link these computers to your existing TweetDeck account by clicking on ‘Settings’, ‘Sync’ and then entering your TweetDeck account information and clicking on ‘Verify Account’.

If you’d like more help with syncing your TweetDeck information read the FAQs here.

You can now link your Flickr account to Twitter, allowing you to send photos in real-time to this very powerful social media application. Before you start, you might want to read the tips on getting started over on the Flickr Twitter Beta site. It’s an easy read and you’re bound to pick up some nice tips there. So, how do I link my Flickr and Twitter accounts? Here’s how you do it.

Step 1. Authorize posting to your Twitter account

Go to www.flickr.com/account/blogs/add/twitter

You’ll need to authorize your Twitter account. Flickr doesn’t ask you for your Twitter username and password, but it does need to give Flickr permission to post to your Twitter account. You can undo this as any time.

Click the ‘Head over to Twitter’ link.

This sends you to Twitter where you authorize the connection between the two apps.

If you aren’t already logged in you’ll be asked to do so. If you don’t have an account (duh!), then you need to setup one, obviously.

Step 2. Click ‘Allow’ to give Flickr access to your Twitter account

Important: This step does not allow Flickr to go in and change your account settings or anything like that. It’s just allowing them to talk to each other and send messages from one system to the other.

Click Allow.

Step 3. Twitter sends you back Flickr

Nothing for you to do here – except enjoy that nice warm feeling that something (for once) is working without a hitch.

Step 4. You’re Authorized!

You can now start Twittering from within Flickr

Actually, you have a few options here depending on how you want to do.

Flickr2Twitter From Mobile Devices

Open up the address book in your mobile device and add your unique email+Twitter address. This is just your existing upload by email address with “2twitter” added.

Flickr2Twitter From Flickr.com

Once you’ve authorized Flickr, you can Tweet photos either using the “Blog This” button, the API, or Uploaded by Email.

Screenshot shows the Twitter has been added to the list of sites I can use.

Click the ‘Blog This’ button when you see any photo you like on Flickr and then select Twitter to send it to Twitter. I’ve tested it and it works.

Flickr2Twitter Via Email

When you upload via email, the subject line becomes your Twitter tweet, and a short URL to the photo is appended (added on).

About Flickr Twitter Beta

Here’s an example from Kellan’s Twitter account of what a post looks like:

twitter.com/kellan/status/2062931580

Following our earlier article on Google integrating with StumbleUpon, I’ve noticed that Wikipedia is also getting in on the act. Would love to know who’s coordinating these decisions.

If you visit Wikipedia, you’ll see that there is a new text link to the article’s title.

You can see in this example, that when we search for ‘Google, it displays a small SU (StumbleUpon) logo, reviews stars, and a link to the Internet on StumbleUpon.

And where does this link take you?

Here: http://www.stumbleupon.com/tag/internet/

Which then shows results its users have tagged for ‘Internet.

Like I said yesterday, I’m not sure what the point of all this is, though I would suggest that if you’re into Search Engine Optimization activities, you might want to focus on StumbleUpon and see how this effects your ranking on Google and/or StumbleUpon.

What’s next?

Let me know what you think.

Dan Cohen highlights that the way Kindle and the Kindle iPhone are set up, you have no idea how many times you can download a book, or how many devices can be used to read it. His excellent article discusses the problems facing anyone who’s bought a Kindle as it seems that Kindle can’t tell (as far as I understand) how many times you have downloaded an ebook, especially if you are synced up to iPhone.

[ad]

Here’s what happened to Dan.

‘Making the situation even more confusing is the fact that the DRM information actually varies by publisher, and to find out how many times they will allow you to download a book you have to visit the legalese. Sometimes the info isn’t there, either. The worst part is this was all confirmed by an Amazon tech support person:

Dan – “How I find out (sic) how many times I can download any given book?” I asked.

Amazon tech support, “I don’t think you can. That’s entirely up to the publisher and I don’t think we always know.”

Dan – “You mean when you go to buy the book it doesn’t say ‘this book can be downloaded this number of times’ even though that limitation is there?”

Amazon tech support, “No, I’m very sorry it doesn’t.”

Now, this might be ok for light summer reading but with reference books, for example, which you want to read today, on your iPhone 3GS, and next year, on the theoretical iPhone 4G, it gets very tricky.

Dan points out that with certain books, you could be limited in such a way that your reading material does not follow your gadget’s natural upgrade cycle.

Over on Gear Diary the discussion continues with “Amazon should update its policy so this info is out in the open and easily accessible. The best case scenario would be to allow consumers to actually, you know, literally own the books they’ve just bought.

Amazon tech support – “if some of the books will download and the others won’t it means that you’ve reached the maximum number of times you can download the book.”

Dan asked him what that meant as the books he needed to download weren’t on any device as he’d deleted those devices and wanted to reinstall.

Amazon confirmed his worst fears.

There is always a limit to the number of times you can download a given book. Sometimes, it’s five or six times but at other times it may only be once or twice.

The worse news is…

Once you reach the cap you need to repurchase the book if you want to download it again.

So if Amazon/Apple wants you to upgrade your Kindle/ iPhone/ iPod touch every year or two, this means that although the books remain in your Kindle library online you may not be able to download them once you upgrade your hardware.

And there is no way to know — at least according to what the customer service rep told me.

You can read the full articles here: http://www.geardiary.com and here http://gizmodo.com

Originally uploaded by Tech Writer Boy

I have used Google Analytics with mixed success over the past 3 years.

I keep switching between it and Site Meter, which is another great site monitoring tool.

Anyway, I decided this week to make an aim and learn more about Google Analytics.

Like many products, it is so feature rich, it can be hard to know where to start.

Here’s what I found this week.

1. Increase the date range

When you open Google Analytics, it shows the default date range, usually by day.

You can change this to by month and year if you’re inclined.

What I didn’t know was that you can click on the actual date range and then select to view across a timeline or across different months.

This lets you check your site across holidays, seasons and other time periods.

2. Compare to past traffic

Next, you can select the Compare to Past checkbox, which lets you see how you’re doing now against your past performance.

This adds new fields to the graph, so you can see you’re making sense of things.

3. Sort the keywords

Ok, I know you know this but I didn’t. You can click on the headings in this pane and resort the results.

Notice the $Index column on the far right?

Use this to see how you’re pages are doing from a financial perspective – you can set goals and targets and even link into your Google Adsense account. Nice!

4.Advanced Segments

You can refine/filter your report by adding more segments.

What you mean?

Add things like new visitors, paid traffic, search traffic to your report, so you can see how your site is really performing.

These are all color-coded to make the chart more readable.

5. Oh yeah, you can also export it and open the file in Excel.

But, did it work?

No!

I managed to add the code no problem to my blogs BUT it doesn’t work on my software templates site.

For whatever reason, even though I added it to the footer, it doesn’t pick up.

If you have any ideas, please drop me a line.

So, blogs work fine but sites with file includes don’t work.

Just me!

Since I added a site map to the site, traffic has went up. Not a huge amount, but there has been a difference. And I know that Google indexes it, so that has to be good. Don’t have one yourself? Try these. Most are v simple to install. Any questions, drop me a line.

What are sitemaps?

Here’s what the experts say:

“Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

Sitemap 0.90 is offered under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License and has wide adoption, including support from Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.”

What site maps plugin do I use on this

I have used Google Analytics with mixed success over the past 3 years. I keep switching between it and Site Meter, which is another great site monitoring tool. Anyway, I decided this week to make an aim and learn more about Google Analytics. Like many products, it is so feature rich, it can be hard to know where to start. Here’s what I found this week.
[ad]

Increase the date range

When you open Google Analytics, it shows the default date range, usually by day. You can change this to by month and year if you’re inclined.

What I didn’t know was that you can click on the actual date range and then select to view across a timeline or across different months.

This lets you check your site across holidays, seasons and other time periods.

Compare to the past

Next, you can select the Compare to Past checkbox, which lets you see how you’re doing now against your past performance.

This adds new fields to the graph, so you can see you’re making sense of things.

Nice!

Advanced Segments

You can refine/filter your report by adding more segments.

What you mean?

Add things like new visitors, paid traffic, search traffic to your report, so you can see how your site is really performing.

These are all color-coded to make the chart more readable.

Oh yeah, you can also export it and open the file in Excel.

Click on the Add to Dashboard button and it will automatically be added to your GA dashboard next time you open it.

But, did it work?

No!

I managed to add the code no problem to my blogs BUT it doesn’t work on my software templates site. For whatever reason, even though I added it to the footer, it doesn’t pick up.

So, blogs work fine but sites with file includes don’t work.

Just me!

If you have any ideas, please drop me a line.

Unobtrusive Sidenotes combines Javascript and CSS so that you can incorporate sidenotes into your web pages or blogs. It even includes a handy set of colors (all set in CSS and tweak-able) to create that oh-so-subtle correlation between the sidenote and the relevant text.
[ad#5links]
The developers –Arc90Lab – believe that footnotes, at least the ones worth reading, are usually far away from the line-of-sight we’re focused on when we read.

It would be nice to be able to optionally just glance over and take that brief little detour if we so choose. It’s footnotes on steroids: sidenotes. The Atlantic Monthly dipped its toe into sidenotes about a year ago in their April 2005 issue.

Sidenotes are completely styled up through CSS. You can set the border and background color of sidenotes as well as positioning with CSS. The colors for side notes and highlighting will alternate between four set color schemes. You can easily change the default colors by editing the CSS that is referenced by the script. The specific CSS styles are included in the HTML file as well as the example link below.

You can also control where the sidenotes end up relative to the paragraph through the CSS. In our example code, the sidenotes alternate between left and right floating within the passage.

You can easily set the sidenotes to only float left or right by tweaking the CSS (left requires no float attribute at all, right simply requires “float: right”).

Currently, the unobtrusive sidenotes script has been tested and confirmed on the following browsers:

Internet Explorer 6.0+

Mozilla Firefox 1.5+

Apple Safari 2.0

Opera Version 8.51
