About 10 years ago when I lived in Beijing, I was given a book with Chinese cartoons that sadly has got lost in the mix. While my Chinese is fairly limited about 100 characters, it helped improve my grasp of the language and become more familiar with structure of sentences and so on. When downtown in Shanghai last week, I came across the same author.

Now, the book was different but the line drawings, characters and presentation are really delightful. I’ve posted some of the images here to give you an idea of how wonderful these really are. Please see the links to my Flickr account and you’ll find them under cartoons.
This book is the ancient Chinese classics, like the Dao De Jing, put into cartoon format – and he really has done a great job.
Every time I read a few pages, usually at night before I crash, I get the gist of what’s said and pick up a few characters along the way. It’s a very passive (and rewarding) way to learn. Without really trying, I seem to be learning some of the characters and idioms.
My aim is to read the Chinese dictionary (without the English), so I can look up characters. I’ll give myself 6 months. Let’s see how it goes.
