Scott Davis reports in the lsj.com that “as the number of flu cases rises nationwide, some businesses are becoming more concerned about whether rising numbers of sick workers will disrupt operations. Some also are contemplating how they will deal with workers who must take extended leave to stay home and care for a sick child.”
TechSmith, the developers of Camtasia and Snagit, is reviewing the use of telecommuting to deal with any employees who may have to stay home to care for ill family members.
“Tech Smith has a paid time off policy for staff if they are sick and in general encourage people to stay home if they are sick,” said Jennifer Midlin, the company’s community relations manager. “We do not have a policy in place for extending sick days, but are looking at things like remote access for our employees to work from home.”
The LSJ.com add that Gregory Palmer, an employment law attorney with Palmer & Wood in Grand Rapids, said he has received calls from several mid-Michigan businesses seeking advice on dealing with a pandemic. He said businesses should have some sort of written plan in place and should consider such issues as how it will pay its bills on time if it closes its doors and whether to use temporary employees if large numbers of workers call in sick.
