Picnik – advanced Online Image Editing Software

June 21st, 2009 · View Comments · Technical Writing

I decided to give Picnik a try today, more out of curiousty than anything else.

If you use Flickr, you might see a discreet link to it when you upload your images.

It’s near the bottom of the page, just below the Save button. So, what does it do?

The official version is as follows:

• Fix your photos in just one click

• Use advanced controls to fine-tune your results

• Crop, resize, and rotate in real-time

• Tons of special effects, from artsy to fun

• Astoundingly fast, right in your browser

• Awesome fonts and top-quality type tool

• Basketfuls of shapes from hand-picked designers

• Works on Mac, Windows, and Linux

• No download required, nothing to install

I can’t see myself leaving Snagit or Photoshop for this but it has one very nice feature that makes it worth looking at.

When you change an image, let’s say crop it, Picnik offers to make a backup file for you.

This is then stored on Flickr, so you always have the original for reference.

Worth looking at if you’re on the road and want to change images but don’t have access to your usual image editing software.
